Lightspeed Zulu (Manufacturer) - Arrived on 12. February 2011
I am keen to get my own headset. The ones provided by the club are not that bad, but many people use them and since I have to get the microphone very close to my lips, I am thinking that having my own would be nicer. The club headsets are also not active noise canceling. With my fledgeling radio practice any scrap of info I can tease from the controller transmission is a bonus, and I hope that this noise canceling feature would get the aircraft and engine noises out of the way.
The headset also has some other features that could useful, such as a bluetooth interface to connect with an iPhone (and other phones I assume), good materials that are supposed to have better passive noise canceling too and real good music quality.
At all online stores I looked, the headset is sold for USD 850, which is cheaper than the BOSE A20, for example. As far as I can tell the headset is not sold in Singapore.
Lightspeed Zulu ANR Headset (Straight Cord, Twin Plug, Portable) - Sporty's Pilot Shop
Sporty’s SP-400 Handheld NAV/COM (Manufacturer) - Arrived 3/9/11
Every pilot is supposed to have a handheld transceiver in case the mounted device in the aircraft is giving up. There are three manufacturers of handheld NAV/COM transceivers as far as I can tell: Sporty’s, Icom and Vertex Standard.
Sporty’s has the SP-400, Icom offers the IC-A24 and Vertex the Spirit VXA-710. It seems that the SP-400 has the widest range of NAV functionalities and the biggest screen with the simplest user interface.
I think I may go with the SP-400, even so it is less water resistant than the Vertex VXA710 and more expensive than Icon and Vertex. I like that the SP-400 comes with AA battery packs and also rechargeable batteries (optional).
